Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating photo and found the claim to be misleading. The photo is outdated and unrelated to the recent suicide bombing in Peshawar, Pakistan. The photo was taken in Afghanistan.
Misbar’s team conducted a reverse image search and found that the photo dates back to 2021.
The photo was featured in an article published by Reuters in October 2021 with a caption that reads: “[1/3] A view shows a mosque after a blast, in Kunduz, Afghanistan October 8, 2021. REUTERS/Stringer.”
2021 Mosque Bombing Attack in Afghanistan
In October 2021, a suicide bomber attacked a mosque in Afghanistan's northeastern Kunduz province. The attack killed 46 people and left 143 wounded. The attack targeted the minority Shi'ite Muslim community.
Pakistan Mosque Blast Left 100 Dead
The death toll from the latest suicide bombing at a mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan has risen to 100.
“So far, 100 bodies have been brought to Lady Reading Hospital,” said Mohammad Asim, the spokesman for the largest medical facility in Peshawar.
The suicide bomber who targeted the mosque was a member of the Pakistani Taliban.
Taliban’s Response to the Attack in Peshawar
A commander for the Pakistan Taliban, Sarbakaf Mohmand, claimed responsibility for the attack on Twitter.
However, TTP spokesperson Mohammad Khurasani refuted that group was involved in the attack, saying it was not its policy to target mosques and religious places.
“Tehreek-e-Taliban has nothing to do with this attack,” a TTP statement said.
