Emerging story
Social media users recently purported that recent cold snapes prove that climate change is a scam.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be fake. Climate change causes extreme weather conditions, including cold snaps.
How Does Climate Change Lead to Cold Snaps?
According to a 2015 study titled "Influence of Arctic amplification on mid-latitude weather patterns" by Francis, J.A., and Vavrus, S.J., the rapid warming of the Arctic is altering the jet stream, leading to increased likelihood of extreme weather events, including cold snaps.
In simpler terms, when the Arctic and polar regions warm up faster because of climate change, cold air from the poles moves into areas that are usually milder, leading to what is known as a cold snap.
What is Climate Change Denialism?
Climate change denialism refers to the dismissal of the data confirming the reality and the causes of climate change. Denialism often involves confirmation bias, manipulation of data, misinformation, and an attack on the credibility of climate scientists and the validity of their findings.
The scientific consensus on climate change is that it is real, human-caused, and a serious threat to planet Earth.
