2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquake
According to the BBC, over 2,300 people from both Turkey and Syria have been killed as a result of a powerful earthquake that struck in the southeast of Turkey, close to the Syrian border.
More than 1,500 people died in Turkey, according to the disaster agency, while 810 people are assumed to be dead in Syria.
Rescuers are still likely to find more fatalities as they dig through piles of rubble in the bitterly cold and icy conditions.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan described the earthquake as Turkey's worst calamity in decades.
Twelve hours later, Turkey's Elbistan district of the Kahramanmaras province experienced a second "independent" earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5.
