After conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar’s team found the circulating video to be outdated and unrelated to the recent earthquake in Turkey.
An Outdated Video Linked to the Earthquake in Turkey
The video dates back to March 12, 2017.
According to SA People News, the footage shows massive waves battering Durban's beachfront, South Africa.
On March 12, 2017, a YouTube channel called “Interesting Stuff” uploaded the same video under the title “Tsunami DURBAN beach front.”
The same video was also featured on a show shared on YouTube back in 2017.
The video’s caption reads, “On Sunday 12 March 2017, Durban North Beach was shut down due to massive waves that hit the beach.”
The 2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquake
An earthquake in Turkey and Syria has left significant damage. On February 6, buildings collapsed across the region as a result of a large earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 and accompanying strong aftershocks, leaving hundreds injured and almost 1,600 dead in southeast Turkey and northwest Syria.
Cyprus, Egypt, and Lebanon were among the nearby countries that felt the earthquake.
Authorities have issued a "level 4 alarm" that requests assistance from other countries. The country's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said that multiple aftershocks and a second 7.6-magnitude earthquake occurred shortly after.
