Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating photos and found the claim to be misleading. The photos are unrelated to the 2023 earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria and affected other nearby regions.
Photos of Rescue Dogs Predates the Recent Earthquake
After conducting a reverse image search, Misbar’s team found that both photos were uploaded to Alamy, a photo stock website, back in October 18, 2018.
According to Alamy, both photos titled “Dog looking for injured people in ruins after earthquake,” were taken by a photographer called Jaroslav Noska. The website does not mention the exact location where the photos were taken.
Two Massive Earthquakes Hit Turkey and Syria
Because it is located at the intersection of three major tectonic plates, Turkey is prone to earthquakes.
A strong earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday. According to reports, the earthquake killed more than 500 people and destroyed dozens of buildings.
A second earthquake of 7.5 magnitude hit southern Turkey within 12 hours of the first massive quake. The second quake’s epicentre was in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras province.
Gaziantep, one of Turkey’s major Southern cities, has a large population of Syrian refugees who are now facing another wave of dispossession and bereavement.
Gaziantep’s historical Citizenship Castle has collapsed due to the earthquake.
