2011 Earthquake and Tsunami in Tohoku, Japan

On March 11, 2011, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake accompanied by a tsunami struck off the Japan Trench, off the northeastern coast of Honshu.

More than 18,000 people died as a result of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, also known as the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami.

The fatal earthquake's magnitude was the largest ever recorded in Japan.
