Misbar investigated the viral video and found the claim to be misleading.
After conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar’s team found the circulating video to be outdated and unrelated to the recent earthquake in Turkey.
The Video Features Huge Blasts in Tianjin, China
On August 15, 2015, the Guardian published the same video, giving credit to the eyewitness, Dan Van Duren, who captured the video.
According to the outlet, the video captures the precise moment that a series of massive blasts tore through an industrial region in Tianjin, a port city in China, at the time.
At least 55 individuals, including firefighters, were killed in the explosions, which occurred where toxic substances and gas were kept.
2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquake
The video started circulating after a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck both Turkey and Syria, causing devastation on both sides of the border.
The quake is regarded as one of the strongest to hit the region in the past century.
On Monday, the earthquake claimed the lives of about 8,754 people, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan.
When the 2,470 confirmed fatalities in Syria are included, the official death toll currently stands at 11,224.
According to the World Health Organization, the total death toll could eventually surpass 20,000.
