Following the recent earthquake that hit Turkey, Syria, and other nearby countries, social media users circulated a video that purportedly shows puppies protecting kittens under the rubble in Turkey.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading.
After conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar’s team found the video making the rounds to be outdated and unrelated to the recent earthquake in Turkey.
An Old Video of Puppies Protecting Kittens
The original video was first published by a Twitter user called, "Feline Defence Force"on April 23, 2022.
According to the publisher, the video was shot in Ukraine.
The user also posted a thread of stories in the same tweet, showing that the kittens and puppies are fine.
From April 23, 2022, until July 12, 2022, the user posted video clips of the lives of the kittens and puppies.
The user also explained that the puppies will be with a human warrior's family in Ternopil.
2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquake
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake that occurred on February 6, 2023, also impacted northern and western Syria and southern and central Turkey.
Over 44,000 people have died as a result of the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria.
According to Turkish authorities, at least 38,044 people have died in the country. Rescuers are still looking for survivors.
More than 5,800 people died in Syria, according to the Syrian government and the United Nations.
Media outlets posted many video clips showing rescue workers saving animals trapped under the rubble following the earthquake.
