Following the recent earthquake that hit New Zealand, social media users circulated a video purporting to show the moment when the 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the country.

Misbar investigated the viral video and found the claim to be misleading.
After conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar’s team found the video making the rounds to be outdated and unrelated to New Zealand’s recent earthquake.
Outdated Video Showing an Earthquake Resurfaces Online
The video, along with other video clips, was shared on a Persian website called "apart.com" four years ago.
The video’s title claims that the video shows the 2015 earthquake in China.
Furthermore, the video was also circulated in 2022 as it purportedly shows the earthquake that hit Papua New Guinea on September 11, 2022.
On the same date, the video was uploaded to YouTube by a channel called, "Pain of the Planet."
According to the video’s caption, the footage shows the earthquake that hit Papua New Guinea on September 11, 2022.
Although Misbar’s team could not find the exact location of the video, we are certain the video is outdated and unrelated to New Zealand's recent earthquake.
7.1 Earthquake Hit New Zealand
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 occurred on March 16 in the Kermadec Islands area of New Zealand.
USGS noted that the depth of the earthquake was assessed to be 10 km (6.21 miles).
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System reported that a tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.
However, the New Zealand National Disaster Management Agency emphasized that there is "no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the earthquake in the Southern Kermadec Islands," hours after the US Geological Survey issued a tsunami warning.
