After conducting a thorough reverse image search using Google and TinEye, Misbar’s team found the circulating video to be outdated and unrelated to New Zealand’s recent earthquake.
Outdated Video Shared in Relation to New Zealand's Recent Earthquake
The video does not show the recent earthquake in New Zealand as claimed. The video dates back to at least 2019.
June 3, 2019, was the earliest publication date of the video that we found.
A YouTube channel called "Hector Elisito" published the video under the title, "Man saves the most important thing in a tremor."
Since its publication, the footage has gone viral as a satirical meme by social media users.
The video was shared plenty of times and almost in every occurring earthquake to date.
The video was also shared during recent earthquakes in Turkey, Japan, and Tajikistan.
New Zealand’s Recent 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake
On Thursday, the Kermadec Islands region of New Zealand witnessed an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The USGS reported that the earthquake's estimated depth was 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).
Hours after the US Geological Survey issued a tsunami warning, the New Zealand National Disaster Management Agency stressed that there is "no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the earthquake in the Southern Kermadec Islands."
