Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading.
After conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar’s team found the video making the rounds to be outdated and unrelated to the recent earthquake in New Zealand.
This Video Shows the Recent Turkey Earthquake
Contrary to claims, the video features the aftermath of the earthquake that hit the south-eastern Turkish province of Hatay last month.
On February 9, the footage was published by the Guardian.
The drone footage shows buildings reduced to rubble due to the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.
The video was also uploaded to YouTube by the Guardian’s channel.
2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquake
On February 6, 2023, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck close to the Syrian border in southeast Turkey.
The first earthquake occurred near Nurda in the province of Gaziantep at a depth of 11 miles (17.9 km).
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the area has experienced thousands of aftershocks since the initial earthquake.
A 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the southern Turkish province of Hatay on February 20, 2023, resulted in more damage and fatalities.
The multiple earthquakes resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities.
According to the UN, earthquake damage in Turkey will surpass $100 billion.
New Zealand 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake
A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands region of New Zealand on Thursday.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the depth of the earthquake was estimated to be 10 km (6.21 miles).
The New Zealand Disaster Management Agency canceled the tsunami warning after the U.S. Geological Survey issued one for the Kermadec islands, stating that "there is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the earthquake in the Southern Kermadec Islands."
