PUTIN VISITS MARIUPOL IN DEFIANT SHOW OF FORCE

Russian President Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to the occupied port city of Mariupol, in a display of his country's continued aggression towards Ukraine. It was Putin's first visit to Ukrainian territory since Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014, and the International Criminal Court (ICC) recently issued a warrant for his arrest on war crimes charges.

Despite the ICC's move, Putin arrived in Mariupol late Saturday after visiting Crimea to mark the ninth anniversary of its annexation from Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin visited an art school and a children's centre in Sevastopol, and was later shown chatting with Mariupol residents.

Mariupol became a symbol of resistance in 2014 when Ukrainian forces held out in a steel mill there for almost three months before Moscow finally took control of it in May. Much of the city was destroyed by Russian shelling.

Following his visit to Mariupol, Putin met with Russian military leaders and troops at a command post in Rostov-on-Don, a southern Russian city some 180 kilometres (about 112 miles) farther east, and conferred with Gen. Valery Gerasimov, who oversees the Russian military operations in Ukraine.

The surprise visit came ahead of a planned visit to Moscow by Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, which is expected to provide a major diplomatic boost to Putin in his confrontation with the West.

PUTIN UNFAZED BY ARREST WARRANT

Despite the ICC's arrest warrant, Putin has not commented on the charges, which deepened his international isolation despite the unlikelihood of him facing trial anytime soon. The Kremlin, which does not recognize the authority of the ICC, has rejected its move as "legally null and void."

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin made it clear that Russia was in Mariupol to stay. He said the government hoped to finish the reconstruction of its downtown by the end of the year, adding that people had started to return to the city once they saw that reconstruction was underway.
