Preparing Mosques for Ramadan in Saudi Arabia
As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Islamic Affairs has released an announcement outlining the necessary steps to prepare mosques for the upcoming period of fasting and prayer.
While the notice did not mention loudspeakers, earlier media reports from January 2023 suggested that the Saudi government had issued new directives to restrict their use in mosques across the kingdom.
According to Gulf News, the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Abdullatif bin Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, had previously limited the number of external loudspeakers to four, which could only be used to make the call to prayer. Moreover, the report added that loudspeakers could not be used for additional prayers throughout the holy month.
To ensure that the guidelines are followed, the minister has instructed all Imams to remove any extra loudspeakers from mosques and store them in a warehouse for later use or give them away to mosques that do not have enough. This is not the first time the government has taken similar steps.
Last year, the ministry issued restrictions on the volume levels for loudspeakers during the fasting month, stipulating that the speakers must not exceed a third of their maximum volume.
