Social media users recently shared a purportedly AI-generated photo of Selena Gomez at the 2023 MET Gala.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading. The photo has been digitally edited but was not AI-generated.
Misbar’s team conducted a reverse image search and found that the photo is an edited picture of Lily James' 2022 Met Gala look by Versace, with a different shade of blue added to the dress and Gomez's face superimposed on James' body. The two photos with the similarities highlighted can be seen below.
Several entertainment reports have confirmed that Selena Gomez was not at the 2023 MET Gala.
AI Image Generation VS. Digital Editing
Digital editing is the process of manipulating existing digital images or footage using software tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, or Premiere. It is a common technique used by photographers, videographers, and graphic designers to enhance or modify their work.
The process of digital editing involves adjusting various parameters such as color balance, brightness, contrast, and saturation to enhance the image or footage. It can also involve removing or adding elements to the image or footage, compositing multiple images, or applying filters to achieve a specific aesthetic or effect. Digital editing is a versatile technique that can be used to achieve a wide range of creative results.
AI image generation, on the other hand, involves using machine learning algorithms to create entirely new digital images from scratch. These algorithms are trained on vast amounts of data and learn to recognize patterns and features in images. Once trained, they can generate new images that are similar to the training data, but with variations that can be surprising and unpredictable.
