A video shows French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife dancing during a music party despite the recent unrest in France.

Emerging story

Amidst the recent protests in France after Nahel’s killing, social media users circulated a video purporting to show the French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte dancing at a music event.

“Meanwhile Macron enjoyed himself at an Elton John concert last night,” a user tweeted.

Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading.

After conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar’s team found the video making the rounds to be older than claimed.

Video of the Macrons Dancing Predates the Recent Riots in France

Contrary to the claim, French media and social media users uploaded the video alongside other footage on June 22, 2023. 

According to several sources, the video was taken during a music festival at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

Yeni Şafak English published the video on Twitter on June 23, 2023, under the caption, “Dance fever alert: Brigitte Macron's comedic dance performance take social media by storm!”

Corentin, a Twitter user, published a photo and video clips showing Emmanuel Macron and his wife in the festival on June 22.

Music Festival at the Elysée

The Music Festival, known as the Fête de la musique, was initiated in 1982 by the Ministry of Culture as a means to engage the five million French individuals who played a musical instrument and bring music to the streets. 

Celebrated worldwide on June 21, primarily in the evening and throughout the night until the next morning, the festival welcomes musicians of all levels, whether amateurs or professionals. It is an inclusive event that encompasses diverse musical genres, open to audiences of all backgrounds.

France Riots Clam

The situation in France is showing signs of calming down following five days of intense protests triggered by the shooting of teenager Nahel M during a police traffic stop. Sunday night witnessed a decrease in violence, resulting in fewer arrests. 

Nevertheless, President Emmanuel Macron has instructed the interior ministry to maintain a substantial police presence on the streets. 

On Monday, mayors urged citizens to gather outside town halls to demonstrate against the violence and looting.
