The Video of Algerian Protesters in Paris Dates Back to 2019

Contrary to viral claims, the video in question features the 2019 protests in Paris against the potential fifth term of Algeria's then-President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

AFP News Agency's YouTube channel uploaded a similar video to the viral one on March 10, 2019.

The video's description states that it shows demonstrators waving Algerian flags as they occupy Place de la République in Paris to protest Bouteflika's bid for another term.

Mass Protests Erupt Against Bouteflika's Fifth-Term Bid

Several thousand individuals, many of Algerian descent, congregated at République Square in central Paris, while additional demonstrations took place in cities such as Marseille and Bordeaux.

According to the police, around 10,000 people gathered in Paris, and another 6,000 participated in the march in Marseille, a city with a sizable Algerian community.

Police Disperse Protesters from Place de la Republique

Despite a ban imposed by authorities, hundreds of protesters marched in central Paris on Saturday to protest against police violence. The demonstration came a week after riots erupted following the killing of a teenager in a Paris suburb.

The police dispersed the crowd from the large Place de la Republique in Paris, redirecting them towards Boulevard Magenta, where they marched peacefully. Two individuals were arrested, according to the Paris police department.

In addition to the banned Paris demonstration, authorities also banned a protest in the city of Lille, while a march in Marseille was allowed to proceed with a modified route, avoiding the city center.

The riots were triggered by the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Nahel M by a police officer during a traffic stop on June 27. The police officer is currently under investigation for voluntary homicide, with his lawyer claiming that he did not have the intention to kill the teenager.
