Social media users circulated a video purporting to show drug cartel shootings taking place in Brazil during daylight hours.
A Twitter user claimed that the video showcased a shootout involving drug cartels in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, stating, "The video features] a drug cartel shootout in Brazil. Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil."
The video had been circulating since at least July 2022, making its rounds on social media multiple times before resurfacing recently.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading.
Upon conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar's team discovered that the circulating video was a part of a TV series and does not depict real-life events of drug cartel shootings in Brazil.
The Footage Shows a TV Series Scene
Contrary to social media users' claims, the video is a scene from the TV series called "A Divisão."
Another video, taken from a different angle and showing the same scene of two individuals on a motorcycle shooting at others appearing to wear police vests, was uploaded on YouTube on July 6, 2022.
The caption on the video reads, "Filming at Morro do Borel Tijuca," indicating that the video was shot at Morro do Borel, a location in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Another video that captured the same scene was uploaded to a published article by Grande Tijuca in 2022.
According to the article, The noise of shots coming from the Borel community in Tijuca has raised concerns among residents.
It has been revealed that these sounds are a result of the filming of scenes for the third season of the series "A Divisão" (A Division). Several people have been capturing behind-the-scenes footage of the recording. The scene being filmed depicts a confrontation between civil police officers and drug dealers.
