Emerging story
Amidst the occurrence of Typhoon Talim in China, social media users shared a video allegedly showing the powerful winds of the typhoon flipping a car amidst its impact on Chinese cities.
“The winds of Typhoon Talim mix with tornado winds that blow up cars in Guangxi Beihai, China,” a Twitter page stated.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the widely circulated video and found the claim to be misleading.
A thorough reverse image search revealed the video making the rounds to be outdated and unrelated to China’s typhoon Talim.
The Video of a Tornado Predates Typhoon Talim
It appears that the video was misattributed to Typhoon Talim in China when, in fact, it was recorded during a tornado event in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The video dates back to April 30, 2023. Michael Ehrenberg, a meteorologist for CBS 12, uploaded the video to Twitter under the caption, "Whoa! I hope everyone is okay. Check out this insane tornado video out of Palm Beach Gardens. Note the flipped car!"
WPLG Local 10, a YouTube channel, also published the video on May 4, 2023. The video’s title reads, "Powerful tornado leaves damage behind in Palm Beach Gardens."
The Tornado of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
On April 30, a burst of severe weather hit parts of Florida, bringing with it thunderstorms, large hail comparable to golf balls, and at least one confirmed tornado, according to reports from officials and residents. The tornado touched down in Palm Beach Gardens, a city in South Florida situated approximately 75 miles north of Miami, during the late afternoon. It caused cars to flip, trees to be flattened, and power lines to be knocked down in the affected area.
Fire officials stated that no injuries were reported in Palm Beach Gardens as a result of the tornado, but they did provide assistance with hospital transports in other affected regions.
Typhoon Talim Hits China
Typhoon Talim struck south-eastern China, displacing 230,000 people and causing disruptions to flights, fishing villages, and coastal tourist spots.
While on its way to Vietnam, the typhoon weakened. Japan experienced around 60 cases of heatstroke, and certain regions in China faced record-high temperatures. In South Korea, the death toll rose to 41 due to torrential rain and landslides. Talim brought strong winds to Guangdong province before making landfall in Guangxi.
As a precautionary measure, local authorities recalled fishing vessels and evacuated fish-farming workers due to storm surges. Japan issued heat stroke warnings in 32 out of 47 prefectures, with temperatures nearly reaching 40°C.
