The Claim

Emerging story

Following hundreds of racist issues against Syrians in Turkey, social media users shared a photo for a Turkish website on the dark web, alleging that the website encourages people of Turkey to kill, amputate, or decapitate a Syrian by offering them financial rewards.

According to the widely surrounded photo, the reward for killing one man is $3000, while the reward for killing a woman is $2000, and for a child is $1500. The website also offers $1000 for amputating a hand or a leg of any Syrian or for a decapitated Syrian head. The payment is claimed to be via Bitcoin because the Government can not track illegal transactions made with Bitcoins.

Racism Against Syrian in Turkey

Even though Syrians witnessed deplorable conditions in the war and escaped to Turkey to have a decent life, Turkey did not grant them this dream. Since 2021, the anti-Syrian sentiment in Turkey was on the rise. Syrians were victims of overt discrimination. Hate speech against them was common in political rhetoric. Politicians and Turks in general blamed them for the deteriorating economic situation of Turkey and accused them of taking over the country, especially after Turkey’s recession in 2018.

According to the recent report of The Stockholm Center for Freedom (SCF), X, in particular, has been used as a platform to spread such negative rumours against Syrians. When someone faces a problem with a Syrian, they tend to take the problem into social media platforms and claim that all Syrians cause such problems, in an attempt to justify the anti-Syrian sentiment.

Hate crimes against Syrians have reached a serious point. Yet, hideous actions against Syrians are barely covered by the Turkish media.
