2018 Typhoon Mangkhut Hit Hong Kong

In September 2018, Hong Kong experienced the impact of typhoon Mangkhut which lasted for ten hours. Mangkhut was known for its extensive circulation, fierce winds, rapid movement, and unique wind structure. It brought destructive winds and record-breaking storm surges to Hong Kong, resulting in widespread and severe damage.

Mangkhut originated as a tropical depression in the western North Pacific and quickly intensified, becoming a super typhoon. After reaching peak intensity, it made landfall in Luzon with estimated sustained winds of 250 km/h near its center. As it crossed Luzon and moved northwestward into the South China Sea, it weakened to a severe typhoon and later made landfall near Taishan in Guangdong. The storm continued to weaken as it moved inland and eventually dissipated over Guangxi.

Mangkhut left a trail of destruction in its path. In Luzon, it brought heavy rain and strong winds, resulting in numerous casualties and collapsed buildings. Overall, Mangkhut resulted in multiple deaths, injuries, and significant disruptions in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Guizhou, and Yunnan, affecting millions of people.

Typhoon Saola Strikes Southern China

Typhoon Saola made landfall in southern China before dawn on Saturday, following the evacuation of nearly 900,000 people and the suspension of business, transportation, and classes in most of Hong Kong and parts of the coastal mainland. Fortunately, damage from the typhoon appeared to be minimal, and some services were gradually returning to normal by the afternoon. The typhoon has resulted in at least one fatality.

The meteorological bureau of Guangdong Province reported that typhoon Saola made landfall in an outlying district of the city of Zhuhai, just south of Hong Kong.

Prior to the typhoon's arrival, approximately 780,000 people in Guangdong and 100,000 others in neighboring Fujian province were evacuated from at-risk areas, and over 80,000 fishing vessels returned to port.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued a No. 10 hurricane alert, which is the highest warning level in the city's weather system. This was the first No. 10 warning since Super typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong in 2018.
