A Video Featuring Landslide in Japan Recirculates After Libya’s Recent Floods

Misbar investigated the footage and found the claim to be misleading.

After conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar’s team found the video in question to be older than claimed and unrelated to Libya’s recent floods.

The Video Shows Landslide in Japan in 2021, Not in Libya Recently

The video in question is unrelated to Libya’s recent floods, as previously claimed. The footage was shot in 2021, and it features landslides in Atami, Japan.

The Sun’s YouTube channel uploaded the identical video on July 3, 2021, along with the caption, "Shocking moment horrifying landslide buries everything in its path in Atami, Japan."

Furthermore, the Hindustan Times published the same video on July 5, 2021. The video’s title reads, “Watch: Landslide in Japan's Atami, 20 people missing, at least 3 killed.”

 Landslide at the Resort Town of Atami, Japan 

According to reports, a significant landslide devastated a coastal resort town in Japan. Following days of intense rainfall, mud engulfed multiple houses in Atami. Three individuals have lost their lives.

Approximately 130 structures were impacted when the landslides swept through the town. Atami, a town known for its hot springs and situated on a steep slope leading to a bay, suffered the brunt of the disaster.

Later, the Guardian reported that the number of people missing in the Japan landslide had climbed to more than 100, citing officials.

Over 6,000 Dead and Nearly 10,000 Missing in Libya Due to Storm Daniel

Following a devastating storm along Libya's eastern coastline, the Red Cross has reported that nearly 10,000 individuals are missing. The current death toll stands at a tragic 6,000, with the grim expectation that it will rise as rescue efforts continue.

Several days after its formation, the storm struck Libya, causing extensive flooding in cities along the eastern coast, including Benghazi, Bayda, and Derna. 

Derna bore the brunt of the impact, with two upstream dams bursting and releasing an estimated 30 million cubic meters (39 million cubic yards) of water, inundating the city of approximately 100,000 residents.

Storm Daniel, which originally formed over Greece on September 4, caused havoc with powerful winds, torrential rains, and severe flooding, resulting in casualties in Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria before crossing the Mediterranean.
