The Claim

A video shows Hamas capturing an Israeli woman.

Emerging story

In light of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, social media users, mainly pro-Israel users, circulated a video clip purporting to show a Jewish woman and children subjected to a brutal attack by Palestinians who were reportedly causing chaos in Israel, targeting all Israelis. Users also claimed that the woman was forcibly taken to Gaza by Palestinian men.

An X user shared the footage along with the caption, “Reports confirming that Hamas’s attack on southern Israel today included the rape of young girls- Isreal War Room This Is So Shameful.”

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading.

Following an extensive reverse image search, Misbar's team found that the video in question is older than claimed and has no connection to the recent escalation in Gaza.

Israeli Forces Assault Pro-Palestine Activists in Occupied Jerusalem

In contrast to the viral claim, the video is unrelated to the ongoing Gaza-Israel escalation. The video actually predates the operation, dating back to October 6, just one day before the events that started on October 7.

According to news sources, the video shows Israeli occupation forces brutally assaulting pro-Palestine activists in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied Jerusalem.

Another scene from the protest has been shared online, showing Israeli police forcibly dragging and arresting a man during a demonstration in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, reported that Israeli police arrested five protesters in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem on Friday for raising Palestinian flags during a peaceful demonstration in support of Palestinian residents.

While regulations stipulate that officers should only enforce the ban on displaying flags when there is a risk of "violating public order," in practice, Israeli police arrested several demonstrators for raising the Palestinian flag.

What Is Going on Between Gaza and Israel?

During the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, Palestinian resistance group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, involving gunmen breaching security barriers and a barrage of rockets fired from Gaza.

This escalation has raised concerns about a possible ground invasion of Gaza, especially after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's threat to transform the besieged Palestinian enclave into a "deserted island" in response to Hamas's attack. As of now, the death toll stands at 313 Palestinians and around 300 Israelis.

Hamas has also claimed to have captured many Israelis, with hostages reportedly scattered throughout the Gaza Strip. Hamas's operation followed a series of Israeli settler attacks, heightened tensions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, and a significant number of Palestinian casualties.
