Emerging story
Social media users recently shared a video that allegedly shows Hamas militants using a doll to fake the death of a Palestinian child.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be fake. The video does indeed show a Palestinian child who was killed by an Israeli airstrike.
The Photographer Confirmed That the Video Shows a Palestinian Child Who Was Killed
Misbar Arabic reached out to Moamen Al-Halabi, the Palestinian photographer from Gaza who captured the original footage, after identifying his watermark on the video.
Al-Halabi, confirming the details to Misbar, stated that the video shows the body of a young boy from the Al-Banna family, who resided in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in northern Gaza.
The Al-Zaytoun neighborhood has faced severe bombardment for several days, resulting in the tragic death of many civilians, including children. This has been reported by multiple media sources, some of which have shared videos of the efforts to rescue children trapped beneath the rubble.
An Agence France-Presse (AFP) photographer, Mohamed Abed, captured an image that displayed an individual, also seen in the video, handing over the body of the child to their family.
The description available on Getty Images confirms that the photograph was taken on October 12, aligning with the timeline of the bombardment that struck the Al-Zaytoun neighbourhoods.
Israel Urges 1.1 Million Gazans to Evacuate
In response to Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, the Israeli military has announced a war on Gaza, urging 1.1 million residents of Northern Gaza to evacuate immediately amid continuous airstrikes. The Israeli Forces dropped leaflets warning civilians to move southward to avoid danger, emphasizing efforts to minimize harm to non-combatants.
However, the United Nations, alongside various humanitarian organizations, has criticized this move. They argue that transferring such a massive number of people through a conflict zone lacking basic necessities is perilous and, in some instances, impracticable.
At least 2,750 people in Gaza have been killed in retaliatory strikes from Israel with another 9,700 more injured, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
