Emerging story
Social media users shared a video clip purporting to depict the explosion of Al-Fakhoura School in Jabalia Camp, Gaza, on Saturday, November 18. The video was claimed to have been filmed from inside an Israeli military vehicle.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading.
Misbar's team found that the video clip was published 24 hours prior to Israel targeting of Al-Fakhoura School in Jabalia Camp in Northern Gaza, on Saturday.
Also, the targeted building in the recently circulated video is the same building as the parliament in Gaza, which was destroyed by Israeli forces on Wednesday, November 15, after days of their control over the site.
UN-Run School in Gaza Targeted: Horrific Scenes and Calls for Independent Investigation
The United Nations confirmed that one of its schools in northern Gaza, serving as a shelter, was hit on Saturday. Disturbing video footage from the scene depicts bloodied bodies scattered across multiple rooms on two floors of the two-story building, with a significant number of women and children among the casualties.
One room reveals a distressing sight of around a dozen bodies lying on the dusty floor, amidst desks strewn and shattered. A substantial hole in one of the room's walls is visible. In the building's courtyard, the canopy roof, supported by a metal structure, appears to have been torn off, with debris scattered on the ground.
Juliette Touma, a spokesperson for the primary U.N. relief agency in Gaza responsible for operating schools in Palestinian refugee camps, confirmed the affected building as al-Fakhoura School in Jabalya. The spokesperson stated that the agency, known as the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), was unable to provide an exact count of casualties as information was still being collected.
Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNRWA, expressed his horror at the images on social media, emphasizing that thousands of displaced individuals had sought refuge in the school during the incident. The UN spokesperson, Touma, mentioned that the U.N. was unaware of the cause and responsible party behind the incident.
The Israeli military acknowledged awareness of the incident and stated that it was under review but did not provide further comment to CNN.
