Emerging story
Social media users recently widely shared a claim alleging that the Muslim scholar Mohammed Hijab said that it is halal (permissible) to marry five-year old girls in Islam.
The claim was also shared by the pro-Israeli rabbi Shmuley Boteach.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigate the circulating claim and found it to be misleading. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach manipulatively shared a cut video to twist the words of Mohammed Hijab.
Mohammed Hijab’s Views on Marrying Five-Year Old Girls
In the full version of the video, Mohammed Hijab clearly says that the reason why Muslims are not allowed to marry girls at the age of five, for example, is because it would harm the girls.
Hijab elaborates on why reading Hadith, Prophet Muhammed’s teachings and sayings, should complement reading the Quran for a holistic understanding of Islam. He gave the example of marrying-five-year-old girls, which is forbidden by the Hadith.
The video, which was published on YouTube back in 2017, is accompanied by a description that reads: “This video is an lucid demonstration how and why hadith denial leads to some extreme prescriptive consequences. Often times Muslims who are put off by some hadith they have little knowledge off end up denying the entire corpus as a result of hadith's non-compliance with a new post-colonial 'modernist' narrative. This video shows the irony in this position.”
Hijab explained his position via his X account, clarifying that the video has been decontextualized.
