Emerging story
Recently, a video has gone viral on social media, claiming to depict a verbal altercation between the current Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, and the former minister Omer Barlev. The video purports to depict their confrontation following the release of preliminary investigation results into the events of October 7.
According to the circulated translation, Ben Gvir reportedly said to Omer Barlev, “Do not blame the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) for your failure; they are working for Israel. You should be ashamed of yourself. Minister Hussein Al-Sheikh did not let you down; he provided information about three terrorists who infiltrated from the West Bank into Tel Aviv, but you disregarded it. You were informed about the possibility of a security incident in Bnei Brak, but you chose to ignore the warning." Barlev responded, "The Shin Bet does not operate based on the analyses of Hussein Al-Sheikh."
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found it to be fake. The video is outdated, and the attached translation is fabricated. It does not depict an altercation involving Ben Gvir after the release of the initial investigation results regarding the events of October 7.
Two Israeli Policemen Gunned Down in Hadera
The video dates back to March 2022, depicting a verbal altercation between former Israeli Minister of National Security Omer Barlev and then-Member of the Knesset Itamar Ben Gvir. The latter interrupted Barlev's press conference on the attack against Israeli police officers in the city of Hadera, where two officers were killed. Ben Gvir accused Barlev, saying, "Shame on you. You should be embarrassed of yourself. You are the most failed extremist left-wing minister. Don't you feel any shame?" Barlev responded angrily, "No, I don't feel ashamed. It is you who should be ashamed. You are nothing." Notably, they did not mention anything about Hussein Al-Sheikh.
According to the Israeli police, the attackers are Arab citizens of Israel, specifically from the city of Umm Al-Fahm. At that time, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.
Who Is Hussein Al-Sheikh?
Hussein Al-Sheikh is a Palestinian politician affiliated with the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah). Currently, he holds the position of the Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), he is a member of the PLO's executive committee, and Minister of the Palestinian Civil Affairs General Authority.
Ben Gvir Appointed as Israeli Minister of National Security
In November 2022, the Likud Party, led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, signed the first coalition agreement with the far-right Jewish Power party, led by Itamar Ben Gvir. Following this coalition, Ben Gvir assumed the portfolio of National Security, wielding broad powers that included overseeing the Border Police in the occupied West Bank.
Israeli Investigations: Army Involved in Killing Civilians at October 7 Festival
The allegation circulated after Haaretz published an investigation on November 18, relying on Israeli police sources. The investigation suggested that Hamas fighters had no prior knowledge of the Nova music festival and 'accidentally targeted' it. The report also mentioned that an Israeli combat helicopter, which arrived at the scene and fired at the attackers, apparently also hit some festival participants.
According to the investigation, the Hamas fighters intended to infiltrate Re’im and other kibbutzim in the region.
Misbar previously published an article gathering several testimonies and facts proving the Israeli army’s involvement in killing settlers during Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.
