Emerging story
Recently, an image has gone viral on the social media platform X claiming to depict students and a professor at Harvard University wearing the Palestinian keffiyeh as a symbol of solidarity with Gaza.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The image does not depict a professor and students at Harvard University expressing solidarity with Palestine; rather, it was taken at Al-Balqa Applied University in Jordan.
Photo From Dr. Mohannad Al-Rawashdeh’s Lecture at Al-Balqa Applied University
The photo was published on Jordanian social media accounts since December 14. It was accompanied by a caption claiming it was taken on the same day during a lecture by Dr. Mohannad Al-Rawashdeh at the Polytechnic College, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Al-Balqa Applied University.
By checking Al-Balqa Applied University's official website, Misbar found a personal profile of Dr. Mohannad Othman Al-Rawashdeh, listed as a faculty member in the Technological Engineering Faculty of the Polytechnic College, specifically within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The attached picture on the website shows the same facial features as the individual depicted in the circulated image.
Upon referring to the Mechanical Engineering Committee's website at the Polytechnic College, Al-Balqa Applied University, it became clear that Dr. Mohannad Al-Rawashdeh does indeed teach Automotive Engineering, as indicated in posts by his students who shared the image.
On the other hand, Misbar checked Harvard University's official accounts and did not find the circulated image or any similar picture.
Pro-Palestinian Student Initiatives at Harvard University
A group of Jewish students supporting the Palestinian cause organized a sit-in at Harvard University's hall on Thursday, October 16, lasting for over 24 consecutive hours. As reported by the Harvard Crimson magazine, dozens of students gathered outside the university hall to support the nine demonstrators who remained inside, chanting slogans calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The protesters concluded their demonstrations without achieving their demands. Their requests included urging the university to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, issue a statement differentiating between anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, and establish a committee to investigate Islamophobia and the suppression of supporters.
Recently, Harvard Crimson reported that a group of university students engaged in pro-Palestinian student activities in November will undergo hearings with the university administration. The administration stated that any activities impeding 'the ability of university members to perform their regular duties' constitute unacceptable behavior, violating university policies and warranting appropriate disciplinary actions.
