Emerging story
Recently, accounts and pages on social media have been circulating a claim that the Egyptian Red Crescent has set up a camp to receive Palestinian refugees on the Egyptian side of Rafah. This claim suggests this is part of an Israeli-Egyptian plan to forcibly expel Palestinians from Gaza.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading, as the purported camp was established inside the Gaza Strip, specifically situated southwest of Khan Yunis, and not on Egyptian territory as claimed.
Egyptian Red Crescent Establishes a Palestinian Refugee Camp in Khan Yunis
On Thursday, December 28, the Egyptian Red Crescent announced in a Facebook post that its volunteers are collaborating with the Palestinian Red Crescent to establish and equip a refugee camp in the southwest of Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip. This facility is designed to accommodate more than six thousand individuals and is dedicated to providing comprehensive relief and medical services, along with daily provisions of essential food and water for its residents.
On December 27, the Al-Qahera News channel broadcast a report showcasing landmarks consistent with those seen in the circulated video. An official from the Egyptian Red Crescent clarified that the camp was established in the Al Mawasi area west of Khan Yunis.
The Humanitarian Situation in the Gaza Strip
According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the latest assessment reveals that approximately 1.9 million individuals in the Gaza Strip have been displaced. This staggering number represents nearly 85% of the region's population, now displaced.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) reports that among these displaced individuals are many who have experienced multiple displacements, continually seeking safety amidst the expanding conflict. On December 26, Israel reiterated its call for the evacuation of approximately 15% of an area in Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza, where around 61,000 people had previously sought refuge.
These displaced individuals face critical shortages in essential resources such as food, clean drinking water, and sanitation facilities. These deficiencies have led to outbreaks of diseases and exacerbated mental health issues.
The Ongoing Israeli War on the Gaza Strip
According to the latest figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, the Israeli war on Gaza has lasted for 85 days, leading to the deaths of over 21,500 Palestinians and injuries to 55,603 others. It should be noted that thousands remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped beneath the rubble caused by the brutal Israeli airstrikes.
