Emerging story
Recently, accounts and pages on the social media platform X have been circulating a video claiming to capture the moment when Houthi rebels targeted an American ship in the Red Sea on Wednesday, January 10.
Misbarโs Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading, as the video clip is old and does not depict the moment when the Houthi group targeted the American ship in the Red Sea on Wednesday.
The Houthi Assault on a Saudi Frigate in 2017
The video footage dates back to December 2017, capturing a Houthi attack on a Saudi frigate along the western coast of Yemen. This incident resulted in the unfortunate death of two sailors and injuries to three others.
The coalition led by Saudi Arabia in the war on Yemen at that time confirmed that a Saudi frigate was attacked by the Houthis in the Red Sea. The coalition stated that three 'suicide boats' approached the frigate, which was patrolling near the port of Hodeidah in western Yemen. One of these boats collided with the rear of the Saudi warship, causing an explosion followed by a fire outbreak. In response, the Houthi group claimed that the explosion resulted from a guided missile and accused the Saudi vessel of attacking coastal cities in western Yemen and Yemeni fishermen.
The Houthis Are Targeting an American Ship in the Red Sea
The video began circulating after the Houthi group in Yemen announced yesterday, Wednesday, that it targeted an American ship with a substantial number of ballistic missiles, naval assets, and drones in the Red Sea.
Yahya Saree, the military spokesperson for the Houthi forces, stated, "The naval, missile, and drone forces of the Yemeni armed forces carried out a joint military operation with a significant number of ballistic missiles, naval assets, and drones, targeting an American ship providing support to the Zionist entity." He added that the operation was "an initial response to a previous American attack that resulted in the killing of 10 members of the Houthi group."
Saree clarified that the Houthi group "will not hesitate to appropriately deal with all hostile threats within the legitimate right to defend our country, people, and nation." He emphasized that they "continue to prevent Israeli ships or those heading to Palestinian ports until the aggression stops and the blockade on Gaza is lifted."
