Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading, as the picture is outdated and does not depict children who were killed in a recent Iranian airstrike on areas in Pakistan.

Children Killed in a Traffic Accident in Iran in 2021

The photo was published in March 2021, and it was stated to be from a traffic accident that occurred in the Sistan and Baluchestan Province of Iran, resulting in the death of 14 individuals, eight of whom were of Afghan nationality and six were Iranians.

At that time, the Iranian Tasnim News Agency stated that the accident occurred on the secondary road from Khorin to Sarjangal due to speeding.

Officials in Iran revealed that several children were killed in the accident, three of whom were in a Peugeot car transporting Afghan citizens.

Iranian Attacks on Pakistan

The circulation of the image occurred after Iran launched missile and drone strikes on sites in Pakistan, following strikes it had initiated in Iraq and Syria, asserting that these actions were part of a "reckoning for those who jeopardized its national security."

This bombardment resulted in the destruction of two main bases of the Army of Justice in the Balochistan region of southwest Pakistan, as reported by media outlets.

The Pakistani Foreign Minister affirmed that the attack launched by Iran within Pakistani territory on January 16, 2024, "Was not only a serious violation of Pakistan's sovereignty but also a blatant violation of international law and the spirit of bilateral relations between Pakistan and Iran."

In a statement, the Minister expressed Pakistan's unequivocal condemnation of the attack, adding that Pakistan reserves the right to respond to this provocative act.

On Thursday, January 18, Pakistan carried out a series of military strikes targeting "terrorist hideouts in the Sistan and Baluchestan province of Iran," according to Pakistani officials.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry confirmed that they eliminated "a number of terrorists during the intelligence operation," named "Operation Marg Bar Sarmachar."

Iran confirmed the death of nine individuals, identifying them as non-Iranians. According to the IRNA news agency, Tehran strongly condemned the attack and called for a meeting with the acting Pakistani Chargé d'Affaires at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
