Emerging story
Recently, a video has gone viral on social media purporting to depict missiles by Iran targeting the U.S. Consulate in Erbil, Iraq.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The video is outdated and does not depict a missile being fired by Iranian military forces towards the U.S. Embassy in Iraq.
The Video Predates The Recent Iran Strikes in Iraq
Misbar’s team found that the video dates back to 2022 and the attack was launched from the Dora near Baghdad targeting the U.S. embassy.
The rockets, which wounded two civilians, had been launched from the Dora neighborhood of Baghdad according to an Iraqi military statement.
In a statement, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad said its compound had been attacked by terrorist groups attempting to undermine Iraq’s security, sovereignty, and international relations.
While doing research, Misbar found that the video was first published by Middle East Intelligence X account AuroraIntel on January 13, 2022. The post affirmed that the C-RAM defense system reportedly successfully intercepted two rockets, with an impact in Baghdad, Iraq, and all of them were 107 mm rockets.
A YouTube video press report published by NBC News on January 14, 2022 showed scenes of the attack inside the Embassy perimeter in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone. The area is home to diplomatic missions and the seat of Iraq’s government.
