Emerging story
Recently, a video has gone viral on the social media platform X purporting to show the U.S. military deployed around the White House to protect President Joe Biden amidst discussions about the possibility of a civil war breaking out.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found it to be misleading. The video is old and does not depict a recent deployment by the U.S. Army around the White House. Instead, it shows the preparations of the National Guard for the inauguration ceremony of President Biden in 2021.
Security Preparations Around the White House Prior to Joe Biden’s Inauguration
The video dates back to January 2021 when National Guard forces were deployed in Washington, D.C., ahead of the inauguration of then-President-elect Joe Biden.
Security measures in the vicinity of the White House and the capital were significantly intensified, with thousands of National Guard troops carrying out patrols around the Capitol. This heightened security was implemented in anticipation of Joe Biden's inauguration and in response to concerns about the potential for further offensives resembling those that took place on January 6. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) additionally issued warnings about plans for armed protests across various states during that period. These increased precautions were a proactive measure to address potential security threats and maintain public safety.
Joe Biden’s Inauguration in January 2021
On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden took the constitutional oath, commencing his tenure as the forty-sixth President of the United States. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump left the palace without attending the inauguration ceremony.
The State of Texas and the Federal Government Wrangle Over Immigrants
The video gained traction amidst reports expressing concerns about the potential outbreak of a civil war in the United States. These apprehensions arose following the deployment of National Guard forces from Republican-led states to Texas, aimed at addressing the rising influx of immigrants along the U.S.-Mexico border. This move contradicted the desires of President Joe Biden and the federal government.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has affirmed his commitment to defending the borders of his state, even in the face of a 5-4 Supreme Court order permitting the U.S. Border Patrol to dismantle razor wire installations that Texas had set up along sections of the US-Mexico border. Despite the court ruling, Governor Abbott remains steadfast in his resolve to address border security concerns within the state.
Expressing discontent, the Republican governor questioned the clarity of the court's decision, criticizing its perceived lack of clarity as it aligned with the Biden administration's intention to dismantle the razor wire while the legal challenge to Governor Abbott's actions remains ongoing.
