U.S. Forces Raise the Texas Flag in Iraq
The American website "Airborne Angel Cadets" posted the photo in May 2016, stating that it was taken after the Airborne Angel Cadets group in Texas sent a care package to a military contact in Iraq. The donations were distributed to several forces in the area, and some soldiers from Texas gathered to capture the moment.
Texas-US Administration Conflict
The circulation of the photo followed tensions arising from disputes between the U.S. government and Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The latter refused to implement a Supreme Court decision ordering the state to allow federal authorities to manage the borders, citing federal overreach.
Abbott stated that he would defend the state against the "invasion" of undocumented immigrants by deploying the National Guard. He rejected compliance with the Supreme Court decision, citing the U.S. administration, led by Joe Biden, not fulfilling its constitutional obligations towards the states. Abbott emphasized the protection of Texas against federal government intrusion, stating that the Texas National Guard, the Public Safety Department, and other agencies in the state operate under these authorities, in addition to state law, to secure Texas borders.
Governors of 25 Republican-led states have pledged their support to Texas. In a statement from the Republican Governors Association, they expressed, "We stand in solidarity with our fellow governor, Greg Abbott, and the state of Texas, utilizing every tool and strategy, including barriers, to secure the borders."
This initiative follows former U.S. President Donald Trump's call for collaboration among Republican-led states to address the challenge of illegal immigration along the southern border, a matter Republicans argue President Joe Biden has mishandled.
