Emerging story
Images of Joe Biden wearing military gear have gone viral. The images spread after the drone attack on the U.S. base in Jordan, which left three soldiers killed and dozens injured.
The photos spread with expectations of an arising conflict between the U.S. and parties in the Middle East, specifically the U.S. intention to strike Iran in retaliation for the attack on the U.S. base. The images spread on different websites from China, Russia, Iran, and more.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be fake. The image shows several elements confirming its AI-generated nature. Such images typically feature bizarre elements that expose their artificial origin, including heterogeneous tools and equipment, distortions in faces and hands, blurry backgrounds, and perfect lighting—all of which are present in the circulated images. Moreover, these images did not appear on reputable websites but instead gained virality on the X platform. Conversely, the image faced widespread refutation from numerous websites shortly after its circulation.
According to the AFP website, the image first circulated on an account named 'SPRINTER' on January 29, 2024. The 'SPRINTER' account has been widely spreading misinformation. Although it still exists on the platform, the post is no longer available, and all posts before February 1 have been deleted. The picture includes many elements indicating it is AI-generated, such as bizarre equipment, deformed and distorted hands, faces, ears, and more.
Is the U.S. President a Member of the Military Force?
According to the U.S. Constitution, the president is designated as the Commander in Chief of the Air Force, the Army, and the Navy. The U.S. Constitution states: 'The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States...' (U.S. Const. art. II, § 2, cl. 1). Despite holding this position, the Commander in Chief is a civilian officer and is neither enlisted nor treated as a military member. This arrangement stems from longstanding traditions, wherein the president assumes responsibility for the safety and defense of the United States. However, it is important to note that the supremacy is given to the civilian authority over the military in the U.S. heritage.
The Attack on the U.S. Base in Jordan and the U.S. Response
The attack on Tower 22 base in Jordan occurred on January 18, 2024, by a drone. Later, Biden stated that the attack was carried out by Iran-backed militias and vowed to respond. On February 3, 2024, the U.S. launched an attack in retaliation, hitting more than 85 Iran-linked targets in Syria and Iraq. The strikes precisely targeted facilities used by the IRCG and affiliated militias in the attack on the U.S. base, according to Biden's statement. He also mentioned, 'Our response began today. It will continue at times and places of our choosing.' These attacks mark a critical escalation in the Middle East, following the events on October 7 and the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. Various regional parties are entangled in the war's complications in Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq, raising fears of a broader conflict.
