Putin Delivers Speech on Defender of the Fatherland Day
In a recorded speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his pride in the Russian forces and veterans of the army, describing them as "true national heroes." He added, "We know it is difficult for you, and we will do everything possible to help you complete the mission you have been assigned." In this context, he announced the readiness of new weapons and Russia's doubling of weapons production.
The speech came a week after Russian forces declared control over the city of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine. Additionally, the celebrations coincided with the two-year anniversary of Defender of the Fatherland Day, on the eve of the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
The Symbolism of Defender of the Fatherland Day
Defender of the Fatherland Day is a national holiday observed in Russia on February 23 every year. It honors individuals who are currently serving or have served in the Russian Armed Forces or the former Soviet Armed Forces, including both military and civilian personnel.
The tradition of celebrating Defender of the Fatherland Day dates back to 1918 when Vladimir Lenin signed a decree for compulsory enlistment in the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army (RKKA), later known as the "Red Army." February 23 marks the day the Red Army began accepting volunteers into its ranks.
