Emerging story
Amid heightened tensions in the Gaza Strip due to Israeli aggression, social media pages and users have alleged that Spain will recognize Palestine as an independent state.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the viral claim and found it to be misleading.
Spain has not officially recognized Palestine as an independent state; instead, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated his intention to propose recognition of the Palestinian state to the Spanish Parliament.
The Spanish Prime Minister Will Propose That Spain’s Parliament Recognize Palestine
On March 9, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced his intention to propose the recognition of a Palestinian state to Spain’s parliament.
“I will propose granting Spain’s recognition to the Palestinian state,” Sánchez said. “I do this out of moral conviction, for a just cause, and because it is the only way that the two states, Israel and Palestine, can live together in peace.”
Sánchez's stance aligns with a growing sentiment among European leaders advocating for a two-state solution amid mounting international criticism of Israel's actions in Palestinian territories.
French President Emmanuel Macron recently remarked that recognizing a Palestinian state is “taboo” for France, while British Foreign Minister David Cameron suggested that the U.K. could consider such recognition following a cease-fire in the Israel-Gaza war.
Sánchez likened his stance on the Gaza Strip conflict to Spain's support for Ukraine after Russia's invasion over two years ago. Emphasizing the importance of upholding international law, he called for an end to violence, the recognition of two states, and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
EU: Starvation in Gaza Used as a Weapon
Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign policy chief, described the obstruction of aid entering Gaza as a "manmade" catastrophe. While a Spanish vessel carrying vital food supplies has departed from Cyprus to Gaza, the U.N. underscores that this maritime delivery cannot fully substitute for land-based aid transport.
Humanitarian agencies stress that the most efficient means of delivering aid remains via land routes. However, they highlight that Israeli restrictions severely limit the amount of aid reaching Gaza, resulting in only a fraction of the required assistance being delivered.
Speaking at the U.N. Security Council in New York, Borrell condemned the use of starvation as a weapon of war, drawing parallels between the situation in Gaza and conflicts elsewhere, such as Ukraine. His remarks follow warnings from the U.N. that over 576,000 individuals in Gaza, representing a quarter of the population, are on the brink of famine.
Israeli Aggression in Gaza Claims 31,000 Palestinian Lives
Since October 7, at least 31,341 Palestinians have been killed, with 73,134 sustaining injuries in Israeli assaults on Gaza. In a harrowing turn of events, Israeli forces once again unleashed gunfire on Palestinians awaiting food aid in Gaza City, resulting in the tragic deaths of six individuals and leaving at least 83 others wounded, as reported by various media outlets.
This devastating incident unfolded shortly after Israel targeted a U.N. food distribution center in southern Rafah with airstrikes, claiming the lives of at least five individuals, including a dedicated UNRWA staff member.
Adding to the mounting concern, Israel's military disclosed plans to relocate approximately 1.4 million trapped Palestinian civilians from Rafah to designated "humanitarian islands" in the middle of Gaza before initiating a ground invasion.
