Emerging story
Recently, accounts and pages on the social media platform X have been circulating a picture, purportedly showing leaders of the Hamas movement attending an Iftar during the current month of Ramadan. This coincides with the ongoing siege on the Gaza Strip.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading, as the picture in question is old and does not depict Hamas leaders attending an Iftar during the current month of Ramadan.
Hamas Leaders at the Turkish Embassy’s Celebration
The image dates back to October 29, 2021, depicting a delegation of Hamas leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Mashal, attending a celebration organized by the Turkish embassy in Qatar. This event commemorated the Turkish Republic's National Day at that time.
The celebration was held at the residence of the then-Turkish ambassador, attended by several Qatari officials, a gathering of ambassadors from Arab and foreign countries, and some officials.
The Hamas delegation was headed by its political bureau chief, Ismail Haniyeh, who "congratulated Turkey on its National Day" and expressed Hamas's wishes, according to a statement issued by the movement, for "further security, prosperity, and stability under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan."
Ismail Haniyeh Urges Arab Countries To Stop Israeli Aggression
During a recent speech marking the onset of Ramadan, Ismail Haniyeh urged leaders, figures, and scholars of the Arab and Islamic nations to take action to halt Israeli aggression in Gaza, swiftly rescue Palestinians, and politically and diplomatically isolate Israel for its actions.
Haniyeh emphasized the necessity of pressuring the international capitals that support Israel to immediately and unconditionally cease this war. He noted that "our people are entering this Ramadan burdened with pain and hopes, enduring the worst massacres in the genocidal war on Gaza."
The Ongoing Israeli War on Gaza
The picture circulated amidst the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, which has persisted for 159 consecutive days. This war continues to entail violent bombardments of residential neighborhoods and imposes a strict siege on over two million Palestinians.
Additionally, Gaza residents welcomed this year's Ramadan amidst the blockade of food, medical supplies, and children's essentials from reaching the Gaza Strip.
