Sweden Joins NATO After Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

In April last year, Finland officially became a member, effectively doubling the length of the alliance's border with Russia. Both countries abandoned their longstanding military neutrality, a cornerstone of the Nordic states' Cold War foreign policy.
Russia has vowed to take political and military measures in response to Sweden's move. Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, revealed intentions to restructure Russia's military and bolster forces in the region to counteract what she referred to as threats arising from Sweden and Finland's NATO membership.
