Emerging story
Recently, accounts on the social media platform X have been circulating a picture claiming that the Russian media published it as a list of perpetrators of the recent attack at Crocus City Hall in Moscow.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading, as the picture is old and not a list published by the Russian media claiming to be of the wanted individuals for the recent attack in Crocus near Moscow.
An Old Picture of Individuals Involved in Violence in Ingushetia
In 2023, Russian media published a picture claiming it depicted the assailants who attacked the Volga Police Center in the Republic of Ingushetia at the end of March 2023.
The authorities accused the individuals on the list of killing three employees of the Ministry of Interior during the attack, releasing their photos and names, and offering a reward for information on their whereabouts.
On March 29, 2023, Russian media reported that authorities found Ramzan Eldiyev, listed in the picture, believed to have died from injuries sustained during a shootout.
Russian media also reported on April 5, 2023, that authorities found another suspect from the list, Mufsar Kutiev, dead in an abandoned house in the village of Aki Yurt after a homemade bomb exploded. Reports also stated that another suspect on the list, Amir Bukov, surrendered to authorities on April 7, 2023.
At the beginning of March this year, authorities announced the killing of six militants in Ingushetia, including Amirkhan Juraziyev and Adam Ouzdov, implicated in the killing of police officers in March of the previous year and listed in the picture.
Armed Attack at Crocus City Hall Music Venue in Moscow
The circulation of the picture followed the killing of dozens on Friday in an armed attack on the "Crocus City Hall" center in the Krasnogorsk area, located in the suburbs of the capital, Moscow.
The incident occurred after the attackers opened fire simultaneously in the lobby and theater of the complex, and set fire to the theater seats.
Russian authorities announced on Saturday that the number of attack victims has risen to more than 115 dead and dozens injured, indicating that the casualty count is likely to increase.
Photos showed the Crocus City Hall engulfed in flames. By late evening, Russian authorities began a collective pursuit operation for the attackers involved in the attack. They warned residents in Moscow and its suburbs to look for any signs indicating the assailants. The Russian government did not immediately identify the identity of any of the suspects.
ISIS Claims Responsibility for the Concert Hall Attack
ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack late Friday evening in a post on the Telegram app, alleging that its militants managed to escape after the operation.
Russian media reported the arrest of at least 11 individuals, including four involved in the attack, according to the head of the Russian Federal Security Service, Alexander Bortnikov, who briefed President Vladimir Putin.
The Kremlin press office quoted Bortnikov as saying that the Federal Security Service is working to identify the network behind the attackers at the Crocus City Hall.
Russian media published pictures claiming to be of the attackers, but their authenticity has not been confirmed yet.
