Emerging story

In the video, Trump asserts that former President Obama is the founder of ISIS. This video coincides with reports of ISIS claiming responsibility for an armed attack on a music concert in Moscow, Russia.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The circulated video is old and was part of Trump's discussion regarding his opposition to the U.S. war on Iraq during his 2016 election campaign.

Trump’s Stance on U.S. Intervention in the Middle East in 2016

The video recalls one of former U.S. President Donald Trump's speeches during his 2016 election campaign, specifically on August 10, 2016, in Florida. In that speech, he asserted that President Obama was the founder of ISIS after expressing his opposition to the war in Iraq, describing it as a "grave mistake" that destabilized the region and "unleashed fury” all over the Middle East.

Trump said in his speech, "And then Obama came in, and normally you want to clean up, but he made a bigger mess out of it. … And then you had Hillary with Libya. So sad. In fact, in many respects, you know they honor President Obama. ISIS is honoring President Obama. He is the founder of ISIS. He’s the founder of ISIS. He’s the founder. He founded ISIS. And I would say the co-founder would be crooked Hillary Clinton, co-founder.”

However, in a radio interview conducted the day after his speech, Donald Trump clarified that his statement was meant figuratively. He explained that he intended to criticize the policies of the Democratic Party in the region, attributing the escalating violence to their actions following the invasion of Iraq, knowing that the Iraq War commenced during President George W. Bush's Republican administration.

Two days after the speech, Trump responded in a tweet, saying, "Ratings challenged @CNN reports so seriously that I call President Obama (and Clinton) "the founder" of ISIS & MVP. THEY DON'T GET SARCASM?"

ISIS Claims Responsibility for the Moscow Attack

The Islamic State group "Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K)" has claimed responsibility for the armed attack followed by a massive fire at a music concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow on Friday, which resulted in at least 133 deaths, according to the latest toll issued by the Russian authorities, and dozens wounded.

In a statement released through its channel, Amaq News Agency, on Telegram, the organization said its fighters "attacked a large gathering... on the outskirts of the Russian capital, Moscow." It added that the fighters "withdrew to their bases safely."

On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to track down and punish those behind the attack. He emphasized that the attackers were apprehended while en route to the Ukraine border, sidestepping any mention of ISIS's claim of accountability for the attack.

In a televised address, Putin said 11 people had been detained, including the four gunmen. "They tried to hide and moved towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the state border," without presenting evidence to substantiate this claim.
