Emerging story
Recently, many accounts have circulated images of a McDonald’s poster, which allegedly congratulates the Israeli forces for purportedly killing over 30,000 Palestinians in the current war in Gaza. The poster also claims that McDonald’s proudly supports the Israeli forces by supplying free meals while Gaza faces starvation.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading. The poster originates from McDonald’s branches in Glasgow City, Scotland, and it was placed by activists on the branches' facades. The "Art Workers for Palestine Scotland" Instagram account shared the PDF version of the poster for dissemination to other branches. Many other accounts shared the call from Art Workers for Palestine Scotland to spread the poster.
Boycott Campaign Against Companies Supporting Israel in the Gaza War
This is part of a broader boycott targeting companies that have openly supported Israel in the Gaza War or have implicitly endorsed its oppressive systems. McDonald’s, Starbucks, Puma, HP, Coca-Cola, and others are among the primary targets of the boycott. These campaigns have impacted their overall revenues worldwide, as indicated in a previously published report by Misbar.
McDonald’s Announces Drop in Revenues Due to the Boycott Calls
Since October 2023, McDonald's has faced global calls for boycott. This came as a response to the support shown by McDonald's Israeli-based franchise, which offered thousands of free meals to Israeli soldiers during the war on Gaza, as detailed in a report by Misbar.
This sparked widespread outrage and calls for boycott, particularly in the Arab region. The fast-food retailer reported its first quarterly sales miss in four years due to the boycott campaign. Sales growth in the Middle East, China, and India branches stood at 0.7% in the last quarter of 2023, below market expectations, while businesses in Malaysia, France, and Indonesia were also affected. The company's announcement led to a 4% drop in its shares.
