Emerging story
Recently, accounts and pages on social media platform X have circulated a photo claiming to depict a Russian naval fleet entering the Red Sea.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading, as the photo is outdated and not of a recent entry of a Russian naval fleet into the Red Sea recently.
Russian Navy Day 2018
The image dates back to July 22, 2018, at Kronstadt, on Russian Navy Day. It shows Russian Navy ships rehearsing for a military parade.
Russian media reported that rehearsals for the main naval parade took place in the city of St. Petersburg, where more than 40 warships and boats passed along the Neva River. Additionally, several ships also travelled through the waters of the Kronstadt Road.
Admiral Vladimir Korolev, the commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy, stated that the preparations for the show were challenging. He mentioned that exercises were conducted on the Kronstadt Road during the day and on the Neva River at night.
Russian Warships Enter the Red Sea
The circulation of the image followed the announcement by the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet that two Russian warships had crossed the Bab al-Mandab Strait into the Red Sea on March 28.
According to Russian media, the two ships are the missile cruiser Varyag and the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov. It was further explained that the Russian Pacific Fleet was executing “specific tasks within the framework of a long-term naval campaign.”
In this regard, the Eritrean Ministry of Information’s account on X platform posted pictures announcing the arrival of the Russian Pacific Fleet frigate “Marshal Shaposhnikov” on March 28 to the port of Massawa. The frigate's visit, which will last for five days, commemorates the thirtieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and Eritrea.
