Emerging story
In the aftermath of the Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria's capital, killing seven including two top commanders, some users widely shared an image on X platform, formerly Twitter, purportedly showing Israelis huddling seeking refuge in bomb shelters in Tel Aviv, fearing Iranian missile strikes.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the widely shared image and found it to be misleading.
Misbar's team ran a reverse image search and found that the image is outdated and has no relation to the current events regarding the Iranian response to the bombing of the consulate in Syria by Israel.
The Image Shows Israelis Seeking Refuge From The Palestinian Resistance Missiles In 2021
The image was posted by the journalist Eylon Levy in a feature on the Jewish News website, titled “Huddled in the bomb shelter, waiting for the boom,” which was published on May 12, 2021. In the feature, Levy explained the situation he along with the Israelis in Tel Aviv faced during Operation al-Quds Sword in 2021.
On 6 May 2021, Hamas launched airstrikes on Israel in response to the constant and brutal crackdown on Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem. The war came especially after Israeli forces were authorized to evict Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied east Jerusalem. The United Nations had warned that the planned expulsions could amount to “war crimes.”
The crackdown of Palestinians and the expulsions led to widespread Palestinian protests across the occupied Palestinian territory and, later, inside Israel. The escalating violence eventually triggered the Palestinian resistance factions in the Gaza Strip to interfere which led to the war in 2021.
Israel Strikes Iran Consulate In Syria’s Capital Damascus
The viral claim came after Iran promised a response to the targeting of its consulate in Damascus by Israel on Monday. The targeting caused the killing of seven people including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), and his deputy General Mohammad Hadi Hajriahimi.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian blamed Israel and described the attack “as a violation of all international obligations and conventions.” The Iranian mission urged the U.N. Security Council to condemn the attack and said Tehran reserved the right “to take a decisive response,” describing the attack as a “significant threat to regional peace and security.”
Israel is on full alert especially after the threats coming from the Iranian officials. Iran’s Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday in a speech to the country’s officials in Tehran that Israel would “be slapped.” Khamenei also posted on X in Hebrew warning Israel of the Iranian response. “With God's help, we will make the Zionists repent of their crime of aggression against the Iranian consulate in Damascus.”
