Emerging story
Recently, social media users circulated a video claiming to show a building that collapsed after an earthquake in Taiwan.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading.
The Video Is Older Than The Recent Earthquake In Taiwan
Misbar's team found that the video dates back to February 2023 and depicts a building collapse in Turkey's Sanliurfa province following a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck both Turkey and neighboring Syria.
According to The Guardian, on February 6, 2023, a minimum of 2,600 individuals lost their lives following two formidable earthquakes that hit both Turkey and Syria within a 12-hour period. The first quake struck as people slept, and measured magnitude 7.8, one of the most powerful quakes in the region in at least a century.
Taiwan Struck by Strongest Earthquake in 25 Years
Taiwan experienced its most potent earthquake in a quarter of a century on Wednesday, resulting in at least nine fatalities and hundreds of injuries, with buildings, highways, and train services affected. Situated along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a zone of seismic activity encircling the Pacific Ocean, Taiwan is highly susceptible to earthquakes, given its geological location.
The region's susceptibility to tremors is exacerbated by the interaction between two tectonic plates, the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, which accumulate tension and may release it suddenly in the form of earthquakes. The mountainous terrain in the area can intensify ground shaking, leading to landslides. Several landslides occurred on Taiwan's eastern coast near the quake's epicenter in eastern Hualien County, resulting in casualties as falling debris struck tunnels and highways, crushing vehicles.
