Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading. 

Misbar's team found that the images being shared on platform X do not depict the aftermath of the New York earthquake; instead, they were captured after a tremor struck Taiwan on April 3.

Additionally, Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) published a picture identical to one circulated online.

Moreover, the video in the claim dates back to February 2023, when the Buffalo area experienced a tremor with a magnitude of 3.8.

According to USGS data, the 3.8-magnitude earthquake in February 2023 was the most powerful in New York state since 2002, when a magnitude 5.3 quake struck near Au Sable Forks in the northeastern region of the state.

Rescue Efforts Persist in Taiwan Following Devastating Earthquake

Rescue operations in Taiwan continue as teams prepare to use heavy machinery on Saturday to retrieve two bodies buried along a hiking trail. More than 600 people remain stranded across various locations, three days after the country endured its most powerful earthquake in a quarter of a century. The focus of search efforts is the Shakadang Trail in Taroko National Park, known for its challenging terrain, where four people are still missing. Operations were briefly halted on Friday due to aftershocks but are set to resume.

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake claimed at least 12 lives and left 10 others missing. Hundreds are isolated by rockslides and other damage, including around 450 individuals at a hotel within Taroko Park. Despite the challenges, rescuers are employing helicopters, drones, and canine search teams to reach those stranded. In a recent success, nine people were rescued from the Tunnel of Nine Turns, a popular tourist spot, while efforts continue to locate two others feared trapped.

Earthquake Shakes New York City and Surrounding Areas

The USGS recorded a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 for the earthquake, initially pinpointing the epicenter near Lebanon, New Jersey, before relocating it to Tewksbury and Whitehouse Station, all within a roughly 10-mile radius in Hunterdon County. Residents in Connecticut and Massachusetts reported feeling the quake, with its effects also noticeable in Boston and Philadelphia. Tremors reverberated over 200 miles away, near the New Hampshire border, lasting several seconds. A seismic event rocked the densely populated New York City metropolitan area on Friday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), with reports of tremors felt along the eastern seaboard—a relatively uncommon occurrence for the region.
