Emerging story

A video showing many ships entering the seas emerged recently with the claim that it shows the Russian naval fleet entering the Red Sea.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the viral video and found it to be misleading.

The video contains scenes put together from several clips that are unrelated to the viral claim that the Russian naval fleet entered the Red Sea.

Russian Drills On Crimea

The first two seconds of the video that shows four fighter jets hovering over a vessel at sea while another vessel is tethered to the banks is trimmed from a video uploaded on YouTube by CNN nine years ago. The first two seconds in the viral video were taken from the timestamp running between 0:09 and 0:11 of the video uploaded by CNN.

According to the video description by CNN, the video documents dozens of Russian fighter jets participating in military drills in Crimea.

Marine’s Day Celebrations In Russia

The following seconds of the viral clip which run between 00:02 to 00:05 show fighter jets hovering around two vessels in the sea.

Through reverse image search, we found that these scenes were trimmed from a video uploaded by the Ministry of Defense, Russian Federation on YouTube on November 27, 2016. The viral scenes could be found between 0:06 to 0:08.

The scenes in fact show the celebrations on the Day of Marines. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, November 27 marks the foundation of the first regiment of marines which was approved by Peter the Great.

Joint Patrols Between The Russian Navy And The Naval Forces Of China

The scenes in the viral video between 00:06 to 00:08 show two vessels videographed by another distant ship. The same scenes were repeated around 00:21 in the viral video.

We found that it was trimmed from a video uploaded by the Ministry of Defense, Russian Federation on X, formerly Twitter. The viral scenes could be spotted between 00:01 to 00:08 in the original video.

The same video was used again in the viral clip around 00:09 to 00:10 where a single vessel was traveling in the sea. This scene can be found in the video of the joint patrols between Russia and China around 01:35.

The part between 00:11 and 00:13 in the viral video which shows a row of ships was also trimmed from the joint between Russia and China. It could be spotted between 1:10 to 1:18 in the original video uploaded on X. The same scene was repeated in the viral video around 00:30

According to the caption of the video by the Russian Ministry of Defense, the scenes show warships of the Russian Navy and naval forces of the People's Republic of China conducting joint patrols in the Western Pacific for the first time from October 17 to October 23, 2021.
