Iran's Unprecedented Aerial Assault on Israel Raises Regional Tensions
Iran launched an unprecedented large-scale drone and missile attack on Israel on Saturday night, in retaliation for an Israeli strike on an Iranian diplomatic complex in Syria. This escalation brings the long-standing shadow war between the two sides into the open, heightening the risk of a full-blown regional conflict.
Over 300 projectiles, including approximately 170 drones and over 120 ballistic missiles, were launched towards Israel in a massive aerial assault overnight. However, the Israeli military reported that "99%" of these were intercepted by Israel's aerial defense systems and its allies.
These retaliatory strikes represent the first time that Iran has directly attacked Israel from its own territory, marking a perilous turning point in the rapidly evolving conflict in the Middle East. Iran has issued warnings of even stronger and more resolute actions if Israel responds to this weekend's attacks. Tehran's ambassador to the United Nations conveyed this message.
During a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized that the U.S. would not engage in offensive operations against Iran, reaffirming "America's ironclad commitment to the security of Israel," according to a senior White House official.
Hezbollah Ambush: Israeli Soldiers Injured Inside Lebanon
Four Israeli soldiers, one of whom sustained serious injuries, were wounded inside Lebanon after being struck by bombs planted by Hezbollah. The incident, confirmed by the Israel Forces, occurred following an announcement by the Lebanese Shia group claiming to have ambushed Israeli troops.
According to the Israel Forces, the event occurred during "operational activity" conducted by a Golani Brigade reconnaissance unit and combat engineering unit on the Lebanese side of the border, several hundred meters from Israel's fence.
This appears to be the first acknowledged violation of Lebanese sovereignty by Israeli troops on the ground since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October.
