Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the viral claim and found it to be fake.

Misbar's team did not find reports from any media outlet on the matter. The New York Post report on this is fake and does not exist on the New York Post website.

The Cited New York Post Report Is Fake

Some of the users who shared this claim supported it with a screenshot of a report from the New York Post, allegedly titled, “Congress to vote on a bill that would criminalize questioning the events surrounding 9/11.”

In the alleged report, it is stated that the bill is supported strongly by AIPAC and ADL, and anyone questioning the events that took place during the September 11th attacks would be fined up to $10,000 and imprisoned for 5 years. The bill is to honor the killed in the attacks and to fight conspiracy theories, according to ADL as stated in the shared screenshot.

The report could not be found on the New York Post website.

In the shared screenshot, the report has four authors: Ben Kochman, Craig McCarthy, Vaughn Golden, and Katherine Donlevy. Misbar's team searched for an article written by these authors in New York Post and found an article published on April 26, titled, “Harvey Weinstein cooling his heels in special Rikers cell after overturned rape conviction,” completely unrelated to September 11 or any bill from the congress.

Why Were AIPAC And ADL Used In The Claim

Using AIPAC and ADL in the claim is not a coincidence or novel to the conspiracy theories about September 11. Since AIPAC, which is a national movement of pro-Israel Americans, and ADL, which is an international Jewish non-governmental organization, are both Jewish and pro-Israel organizations, they were also a target of the conspiracy theories about September 11 that were directed at the Jewish people or pro-Israelis.

Some of the conspiracy theorists believe that the Jewish people, with the support of Israel, arranged the 9/11 attacks. They claim Jewish people were not killed in the attacks and 4,000 Jewish employees at the World Trade Center had received advance notice not to turn up for work.

According to these claims, the Israeli government mounted the attacks to goad the U.S. into attacking its regional enemies or responsibility lies with powerful Jewish elites who control world events from the shadows.

Nevertheless, 119 employees at the World Trade Center were confirmed to be Jewish, and at least a further 72 were believed to be Jewish, which would constitute 9.2% of the 2,071 victims.

Conspiracy Theories About September 11

Even though more than 20 years have passed since the events of 9/11, conspiracy theories are still spreading and over time they became more complicated, especially once the 9/11 Commission Report was released to the public.

Aside from the claim in question, a conspiracy theory related to Israel went viral two years ago claiming that Israel already knew about the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 1968 when it minted a Shekel coin featuring a plane, a tank, and a symbol of the Twin Towers before the attack occurred in 2001.

Misbar investigated the claim when it went viral in 2022 and found that the Shekel coin is in fact a medal that commemorates the French-Israeli Six-Day War.

Another conspiracy theory about September 11 is a theory claiming that jet fuel can't melt steel beams suggesting that the World Trade Center's Twin Towers were demolished by explosives.

Misbar investigated this claim when it went viral on social media platforms and concluded that the jet fuel did not melt steel beams but it weakened their structural integrity until they could not support the weight. Eventually, the beams collapsed causing a domino effect that led to the destruction of the Twin Towers.
