Rising Arrests in Campus Protests Across the U.S.

The number of arrests among campus protesters continues to climb following the initial detentions at Columbia University two weeks ago. As per a CNN examination of university and law enforcement announcements, over 250 demonstrators were detained on May 2, marking a surge in arrests since April 30, which witnessed nearly 400 arrests — the highest daily tally since the protests commenced.

Since April 18, more than 2,200 individuals have been apprehended on college and university campuses. However, the University of Southern California (USC) confirmed that police cleared the protest encampment without any arrests on Sunday, as stated in an official announcement. Despite this, USC's main University Park Campus in Los Angeles remains shuttered, as reported by the university.

Global Spread of Pro-Palestinian Protests Sparks Campus Activism

In the second week of protests demanding a ceasefire in Israel's war in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of over 34,000 Palestinians, thousands of students are urging dozens of universities to disinvest from Israel. Some universities have been compelled to cancel graduation ceremonies, while others have witnessed entire buildings being occupied by protesting students.

Among the latest institutions to join the movement is The City University of New York (CUNY), where hundreds of students have established an encampment on campus, displaying banners with slogans such as "No More Investment in Apartheid."

University administrators across the United States have attempted to suppress the protests but have mostly been unsuccessful. Law enforcement has responded with force, as evidenced by videos from various states depicting the forceful arrest of hundreds of students, including faculty members.

In the early hours of Saturday, police officers in riot gear dismantled an encampment at Northeastern University in Boston. Despite several dozen students shouting and booing from a distance, the situation was generally non-confrontational.
