Emerging story
Amidst news of Israel's military invasion of Rafah, pro-Israel social media users shared a video clip purporting to feature actors from Rafah preparing to fake injuries and deaths to create sensational footage.
An X user shared the video along with the caption, “Rafah actors are preparing, and we may soon witness disturbing footage from Rafah.”
The footage was initially posted by @GAZAWOOD1, an account known for disseminating propaganda that accuses Palestinians of fabricating deaths and injuries.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the viral video and found the claim to be misleading.
After conducting a thorough reverse image search on the clip, Misbar’s investigative team found the video making the rounds to be misleading and showing behind-the-scene footage.
Palestinian TV Show Behind-the-Scene Clip
Contrary to social media users’ circulating claim, the clip features preparations for filming an episode of the Palestinian TV show "Nazeef al Torab–Bleeding Dirt.”
Director Bashar Al-Najjar uploaded the same video to YouTube on April 10, stating that it shows behind-the-scene of filming the series "Nazeef al Torab," which is broadcast on Alaraby TV 2.
Furthermore, Misbar's team found the episode featuring the actual scene depicted in the backstage video, wherein Israeli occupation forces invaded a cemetery and killed Bilal, the actor seen wearing fake makeup in the viral video.
The series "Nazeef al Torab" was filmed in the Old City of Nablus, as well as Jenin and Tulkarm, one month after the start of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.
In the setting of Tal Al-Sabr, a town near Nablus, Palestinian prisoner Bilal manages to escape from his occupier. His aunt, Umm Askar, intervenes and saves him from certain death. Bilal adopts the new identity of Assif.
Israel Seizes Control of Rafah Border Crossing
Israeli occupation forces have taken control of the Rafah border crossing in Gaza, disrupting a critical route for humanitarian aid and potential refuge for civilians amidst escalating hostilities.
The IOF announced on Tuesday its acquisition of "operational control" over the Gaza side of the border crossing, which connects the besieged Gaza Strip with Egypt. The closure of this vital passage and the deployment of tanks in Rafah signify Israel's resolve to continue its offensive in the southern city, despite ongoing ceasefire negotiations.
This operation coincided with a nighttime assault on eastern areas of the city, during which residential homes were bombed, resulting in the killing of at least 12 civilians.
Despite Hamas's announcement on Monday of its acceptance of a ceasefire agreement brokered by mediators, the assault persists.
The United Nations and humanitarian organizations have condemned the Israeli army's seizure of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing, warning of exacerbated shortages in an enclave already teetering on the brink of famine.
